About Cheorwon DMZ Ecological Reserve

The Cheorwon DMZ Ecological Reserve lies within the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, an internationally recognized buffer zone established after the Korean War. Spanning a significant portion of the Cheorwon County in Gangwon-do province, South Korea, this reserve has become an unintended sanctuary for wildlife due to restricted human access for over 60 years. The landscape features a diverse mosaic of wetlands, grasslands, forests, and rice paddies, supporting a rich variety of flora and fauna, including endangered species such as the red-crowned crane and the Asiatic black bear. The area's geography is shaped by the flat to gently rolling plains drained by tributaries feeding into the Imjin River, interspersed with small mountains and ridges. Historic remnants from the war era, such as trenches and observation posts, are scattered throughout the reserve, offering poignant insights into Korea’s turbulent past. For visitors, guided ecological tours and birdwatching excursions provide unique outdoor opportunities to experience the area's natural and historical significance in a strictly controlled manner. While infrastructure and access remain strictly regulated for security and conservation reasons, the Cheorwon DMZ Ecological Reserve is a compelling destination for conservationists, historians, and nature enthusiasts seeking a rare glimpse into a fragile and largely undisturbed ecosystem at the heart of a divided peninsula.
